Novel navigation techniques allowed bombers to fly even in poor weather and when successful, the effect on German cities was devastating, forcing the Germans to divert enormous resources to defend their homeland. This tactic was very effective in damaging German industry, transportation and morale and opened a "second front" in Europe long before the invasion of Normandy.
