Corporal Steve Martin

Corporal Steve Martin, of St-Cyrille-de-Wendover, Quebec, died while on patrol two days before his 25th birthday.

Cpl Martin, a member of the 3rd Battalion of the Royal 22e Regiment (the Van Doos), was killed 18 December 2010 in an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device. He had been in Afghanistan for three weeks. The explosion left three other Canadian soldiers wounded.

As part of a security team, he was on patrol near a road that was under construction in an area of Afghanistan known as the horn Panjwaii, an area the Taliban once controlled and used to attack Kandahar City.

Cpl Martin, who was on his second tour of Afghanistan, enlisted in Trois Rivières, Quebec, on 5 October 2005, joined the 3rd Battalion of the Royal 22e Regiment (also known as the Van Doos). At the time of his death, he was serving with the Parachute Company of the 1st Battalion Royal 22e Regiment battle group.

Cpl Martin also served in Haiti following the 2010 earthquake that devastated the island nation. He is survived by his parents, Eloi and Chantale and his brothers, Patrick and Stéphan.
