Corporal Dany Fortin

Corporal Dany Olivier Fortin, from 425 Tactical Fighter Squadron at 3 Wing Bagotville, Quebec was aged 29 when he was killed. He was originally from Baie-Comeau, Quebec. He was deployed as a weapons technician with the Canadian contingent of NATO forces in Afghanistan.

He was killed along with WO Dennis Brown and Cpl Kenneth Chad O'Quinn after their armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device in the Arghandab District approximately 10 kilometres northwest of Kandahar City. They were returning to base after defusing another roadside bomb. Two other soldiers injured in the incident were evacuated by helicopter for medical treatment.

Cpl Fortin joined the Air Force branch in 2001 and was on his first mission in Afghanistan. "Dany-O" to his friends, he was described as an intelligent, sincere and morally upright soldier with a keen sense of humour. Raised in the Saguenay region, he was an ardent Montreal Canadiens fan.

He is survived by his fiancée Manon Gaudreault, mother Christine Morin, father Laval Fortin (Hélène Baril), sister Valérie Fortin (Frédéric Lafleur), grandmothers and extended family.
